This is what the compact disc for Fergus & Geronimo's Unlearn, their debut full-length for Hardly Art (out Jan. 18), looks like.

It's just humorously self-deprecating enough to fit in with their label's name (but I still want to delete that extraneous apostrophe).
As for the music, Unlearn is a charmingly quirky collection of smart-guy-verging-on-smart-ass pop. F&G have Frank Zappa's dismissive laugh down pat and they also engage in Zappa-esque doo-wop send-ups/homages. But, more rewardingly, they delve into the sort of rakish indie rock that the Merge and Siltbreeze imprints championed in the '90s. Unlearn is an archetypal grower; if it initially seems underwhelming, give it a few more spins and you'll discover subtle hooks galore clamoring for domination in your consciousness—especially "The World Never Stops," destined to be one of the songs of 2011. Nice one, F&G and HA.
