More exciting news for retail in the West End section of downtown: Woonwinkle! I love the word, which means "home store" in Dutch, and is the name of a design-oriented store a la Canoe that's set to open at 935 SW Washington at the end of March. Say owners Kristin Van Buskirk and Erica Essink, "Woonwinkel has a decidely modern aesthetic. But it’s not the slick, hard edges many people associate with modern décor. We want to cultivate the very human side of modern that has been emerging: wood, wool, clay. We describe it as new modern. Local favorites like Esque (glass), Pigeontoe (ceramics), and Studio Makelike (textiles) sit perfectly next to the earthen dishware by the Dutch studio Atelier NL, a rough-hewn but brightly-colored occasional chair by Jens Fager, and Hella Jongerius’s iconic ceramic vessels. Customers will also find surprising collaborations between Portland creatives."
We'll be in touch with details on grand opening festivities. In the meantime, savor the economic optimism that accompanies new-store news like this!
