Katy Kippen on Grayling for less than $100 and The Holiday Studio Party

Katy Kippen of Grayling is hosting a holiday studio party on Saturday from 1-6 pm. If you haven't checked out her jewelry designs, which range from bold statement pieces to subtler, draped chain earrings and necklaces, it's a good opportunity to see the latest pieces she's been working on—no pressure to buy. From Kippen:

So why the party. Everyone's having parties. The typical approach to parties around this time of year is to have champagne and discounts. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just feels tired to me. This time of year is wrought with long to do lists and too much stress. I wanted to extend an invitation to our clients and neighbors to view our newest designs/collection in a comfortable setting. One where there's no need to rush or feel obligated to buy (I am a born browser myself).

The afternoon will also be a celebration for those involved in the brand up until this point. My photographer, model, graphic designer, accountant, sales reps, and production manager have worked really hard to create a strong foundation. And g r a y l i n g would just be a project if it weren't for my customers and stores. We sorta blew through my initial goal for securing partnerships with retailers (we're in about 25 stores and galleries nationwide) and we hope to double that number by this time in 2011. I am thankful for everything. No matter what the economic circumstance I am incredibly lucky to be able to design and sell jewelry for a living.

So, the new collection. I built the majority of the new necklace designs on a dress form so they drape really nicely on the body. I also re-worked some of the original collection. Fit has always been really important to me from my clothing days [Kippen managed the now-shut Nolita]. It has been a real turning point to be able to create pieces this way, as the quality is better and they lay perfectly. We added new stones, new colors, and new metals.

We're releasing lots of styles that retail under one-hundred dollars. Part of me doesn't want to believe in social media, but I do love hearing from fans and followers, so having this open line of communication is huge. A while back, I asked for feedback on our website. The overwhelming response was basically, "we need something under $100", and off I went! Additionally, stores asked for more statement necklaces and bracelets to match - I appreciated the challenge.

So, all in all, we're debuting new the collection at the party - and we'll be giving away sparkly earrings while supplies last (and gift wrapping everything up beautifully). If people can't make it I hope they'll take a look at all the new styles online this week!
